Whether or not you are cut out to be a stay-at-home dad can be determined by considering a few factors about yourself and what you want out of life.

First of all, what have been your career goals or aspirations in life? Someone who has been dreaming about becoming a doctor or cable repair man is not likely to be content with staying home. Are you going to need the challenge of fulfilling your dreams which involves spending significant time away from home?

Perhaps you have already reached your goal in employment and shifting to a father who is home most of the time might be just the change you are looking for. This is something that needs careful consideration because taking a short vacation from work is very different than switching channels abruptly and staying home all the time.

Possibly, working only part-time is an option for you if you like to have some kind of gainful employment without being bogged down with the responsibility of a full-time job which takes you away from the kids you want to be with.

Your personality is a consideration too when trying to make this important decision. Are you a social type who needs interaction with other adults every day or are you more inclined to be content with your family as your main contact in the world? Every father is different in this aspect. Some dads love to be with their kids, playing and taking care of them without a care in the world for other tasks outside the home. Other dads are too driven to success, either monetary of career-wise, to be happy being home a lot despite how much they may love their children.

Finances are also a consideration. Assuming that your wife is able to support the family on her income, you will not need to consider any work if you do not want to. If some extra income is still needed, consider some self-employment and work that can be done at home or after hours when mom is home. There are a variety of ways to work it out. It just depends on you, the type of person you are and what you want out of life. For the father who believes his most valuable job in life is raising his kids, then at home is where you should be.
